4 just
• "I see your point, but people here just can't afford that sort of luxury..." (DL: 65)
• "I'm sorry Siegfried, I just have nothing to say." (DL: 95)
• "It's just too early." (DT: 265)
• "Не told you he was taking you out. Didn't he?... And just happened to leave his wallet at home." (DT: 66)
• "Wasn't that just typical?..." (DL: 131)
• "We were sitting towards the rear of the aircraft, just behind the wing." (DL: 68)
• "This was the woman who just a few hours before had said she would do anything for them." (DL: 76)
• "It's by a British friend of mine.... He gave it to me just yesterday." (DL: 119)
• I felt nauseated just to breathe them. (DT: 531)
• It made you smile just to look at him. (DL: 115)
• "Don't worry, just do exactly as I do." (DL: 180)
• "Lovely girl. I've always said so. Looks just like a statue of Diana in my father's club." (DT: 61)
• I said I was rather tied up at the school over most weekends; though the half-term holiday was the week-end after the next and I might just be in Athens then - but I couldn't be sure. (F: 162)
• I didn't answer. I was wondering just how we had reached this stage. (JB: 53)
• " Just what is all this nonsense?" (KA: 74)
• I knew just what happened to people who were sacked from the local government. (JB: 200)
• "Oh thank you, James, it's just what I want." (KA: 89)
• And I am fairly sure he would have done just that if only I had made it in to see him. (DT: 77)
• I nearly hung up... but just then the operator came back on. (DT: 160)
• He ran lightly up the stairs. Ronny was just emerging from Gerald Wade's room. ( AC1: 24)
• I convinced myself that it was just superstition. (DL: 76)
• It's just a rumour, actually. (DL: 120)
• "No, Howard, you said it was the way out, I just agreed." (DL: 117)
• And it wasn't just a question of having kept my mouth shut. (DT: 550)
• Absolute peace. High and very far to the north I could just hear an aeroplane. (F: 113)
• "It's terrible," said Charles. "Really, I can just see him. Standing out in a yard wearing some kind of stupid apron." (DT: 112)
• "I don't seem to have my information handy right now, maybe you could just prompt me." (DT: 159)

6 the touch
Jake Chambers, Alain JohnsThen he left, standing on the porch for a moment to verify he still had the Bar K to himself. Of course he did. Yet for a blink or two, there at the end, he’d felt uneasy—almost as though he’d been scented. By some sort of In-World telepathy, mayhap. / There is such; you know it. The touch, it’s called.
“Dan-dinh—where did you hear that, Jake?” / “Never did. Picked it up from your mind, I think.” Jake added hastily: “I don’t go snooping in there, or anything like that, but sometimes stuff just comes. Most of it isn’t very important, I don’t think, but sometimes there are phrases.” / <…> / “Yes.” That he hadn’t been concentrating on, and he would have felt better had Jake not known of it. But the boy was strong in the touch, and Roland believed him when he said he hadn’t been snooping. At least not on purpose.
“Not Andy,” Roland repeated. It was just a feeling, but his feelings were his version of the touch. “There’s time to think about it, Pere… and we’ll think, too.”
Now she went to the foot of her bed, knelt, and passed one hand over the earth floor there. Lines appeared in the sour dirt as she did. They formed a square. She pushed her fingers into one of these lines; it gave before her touch. She lifted the hidden panel (hidden in such a way that no one without the touch would ever be able to uncover it), revealing a compartment perhaps a foot square and two feet deep.
“I hate that noise,” Alain said. He sounded morose and sleepy. In fact, he had been troubled by odd dreams and premonitions all night—things which, of the three of them, only he was prey to. Because of the touch, perhaps—with him it had always been strong.
Aye,” she said, “pie for the bumbler, too, as I’m sure he’s Arthur Eld in disguise and will reward me with jewels and gold and the healing touch.”
Cuthbert patted Roland’s face with no result. Alain pushed him aside, knelt, and took the gunslinger’s hands. He had never used the touch this way, but had been told it was possible—that one could reach another’s mind, in at least some cases. / Roland! Roland, wake up! Please! We need you! / At first there was nothing. Then Roland stirred, muttered, and pulled his hands out of Alain’s.

8 right of way
1) право прохода или проезда по земле, принадлежащей частному владельцу‘I wonder when they'll get it built?’ Frank said. ‘Well, it probably won't be this summer... They're only just beginning to buy up their right of way, you knew; a few of the people don't want to sell.’ (J. Jones, ‘Some Came Running’, book III, ch.
All the keepers came to know me and to afford me that rare privilege, an unchallenged right of way. (A. J. Cronin, ‘The Given Years’, book II, ch.
The ambulance took off up the street, moving at high speed, siren screaming for the right of way. (E. S. Gardner, ‘The Case of the Hesitant Hostess’, ch. 2) — Машина скорой помощи помчалась по улице, сирена гудела, требуя освободить дорогу.
Putt was crossing the track... and was run over and killed by a new fast streamliner. The engineer... made out a report of the accident, claiming that Putt... failed to yield the right of way. (E. Caldwell, ‘The Sure Hand of God’, ch. He hadn't asked for permission to call. He had merely said he was coming. Mildred sensed the man did everything like that.

9 Bends of the Rainbow
SK, DT 42. Магические Кристаллы (Wizard’s Glasses)3. (Maerlyn’s Rainbow)••“Wizard’s Rainbow is just a fairy-tale,” Cuthbert said, smiling in response to Steven’s smile. Then—perhaps it was something in Steven Deschain’s eyes—Cuthbert’s smile faltered. “Isn’t it?” / “Not all the old stories are true, but I think that of Maerlyn’s Rainbow is,” Steven replied. “It’s said that once there were thirteen glass balls in it—one for each of the Twelve Guardians, and one representing the nexus-point of the Beams.”
“If the other balls in the Wizard’s Rainbow did exist, most are broken now. Such things never stay in one place or one pair of hands for long, you know, and even enchanted glass has a way of breaking. Yet at least three or four bends o’ the Rainbow may still be rolling around this sad world of ours. The blue, almost certainly. A desert tribe of slow mutants—the Total Hogs, they called themselves—had that one less than fifty years ago, although it’s slipped from sight again since. The green and the orange are reputed to be in Lud and Dis, respectively. And, just maybe, the pink one.”

‘Melvin will send Carr a check...’ ‘I'm just wondering,’ Selby said, ‘if perhaps it may not have been the other way around. I'm wondering if Carr didn't hire Melvin.’ (E. S. Gardner, ‘The D. A. Takes a Chance’, ch.

11 ships that pass in the night
Longfellow):Ships that pass in the night, and speak each other in passing.Only a signal shown and a distant voice in the darkness; So on the ocean of life we pass and speak one another.Only a look and a voice; then darkness again and a silence. Harraden, 1864 - 1936))]‘You remember, Fleur? The young Englishman I met at Mount Vernon.’ ‘Ships that pass in the night!’ said Fleur. (J. Galsworthy, ‘Swan Song’, part I, ch.
Don: "I'm crazy about you. I've been crazy about you for three whole years." Miranda (contemptuously): "Crazy about me! What about Beejie Lemaire, and Zenda Hicks?.." Don: "They didn't mean a thing to me, not a thing, you know they didn't. They were just ships that pass in the night." (N. Coward, ‘Relative Values’, act II, sc.
It would be a great pity if we stopped being friends, simply for nothing... and drifted apart... like ships that pass in the night... (A. J. Cronin, ‘Shannon's Way’, book II, ch. 3) — Будет очень жаль, если наша дружба оборвется просто так, ни с того ни с сего...
